From campus to career 5 tips to stand out during the job search

From campus to career 5 tips to stand out during the job searchFrom campus to career 5 tips to stand out during the job searchStatistics showed that in 2016, 33.7% of women graduated with a 4-year degree vs. 33.2% of men. This gap has been narrowing for years, and women finally surpassed men for the first time in 2014 We just made history 4 years ago This is progressionMore women are making their mark and creating their trajectory for their futures. Im proud of us What this also means is that there will be more women entering this fresh new phase of their lives called a career. As a graduating female pursuing your career, you will find yourself receiving solicited and unsolicited interview advice from friends and family.Regardless of all of the wonderful advice you will hear about resume content, what to wear, and interview questions, there are other components of interviewing that can set you apartMake them remember YOUIn this crazy interview environment of competition, process and s tress, give yourself a signature statement that will make you stand out. Wear a bright orange shirt with your interview suit, or wear unique glasses to each interview. Employers will remember you and associate you with the signature item. This is also a chance to show your personality, thoughtfulness, and creativity. Regardless of your market, a hiring company will appreciate that you want to leave your mark.Use your networkLets face it The www is our way of life. We rely on it to shop, work, travel, check the weather and yes, find a job. Everyone uses it, especially when looking for a job. Our first instinct is to go the computer and search popular websites like LinkedIn, Monster, and Ladders. I get it. Ive done it. These websites provide quick access to available jobs, salaries, and requirements. Excellent for visibility to what is out there for you. But, upon attaching your resume and clicking the submit button there is a risk. You risk getting lost in the shuffle of the hundreds or thousands of other candidates or perhaps going into sheer cyberspace. So, instead of going into cyberspace, or not having your resume reviewed at all, get creative and do something different network. Network with other people, but without the computer. This is not rocket science I know, but people have gotten away from using themselves as their own best resource. The upside is that fundamentally people like to help people, especially when they are young, diligent and excited about pursuing their careers.Person to person networking will help you gain momentum in your job search in a flash. Sound overwhelming? Keep it simple. Make a list of 10 people you know who have careers you admire and then, wait for it CALL them. Email is great too, but emails are commondistributions-mix and can be easily ignored. So do something different. When you get them on the phone, let them know you are in the market and looking for the first springboard job into your career. Ask if there is someone a t their place of work you could speak with or is there someone else they would recommend. This may feel a little awkward at first, but these chances have to be taken to widen the possibilities of new employment. Even if the person on the other end of the line doesnt know of an immediate position they may know someone else at another company who does.Be consistentWhile making the interviewing rounds you will most likely be seated in front of other employees for additional interviews in the office. The purpose of this is for everyone to get a beat on you to see if you are right for the team. This is completely normal. During these additional meetings, be consistent with your content and character with everyone. I know this may sound elementary, but this is important because these same people will compare notes on you. Simple rules are be present, dont get pulled away by your phone, dont discuss your personal life. Displaying professional etiquette and respect for those around you will go a long way. This is your time to shine and show off all of the wonderful reasons an employer should hire you. Be authentic, thoughtful, professional and prepared and you will succeed. And most of all, remember how special you are. After all, you are history makers.Write a thank you noteThe value of a thank you is so overlooked these days. As simple as this seems, people in general are so fast paced now they dont take an extra moment to thank someone. In your interview process, after meeting with someone, instead of going to youremail to send a thank you message like everyone else, take a moment and hand-write it.Again, this is an area where email is predictable. Everyone expects an emailed thank you message nowadays, so writing a personal note will differentiate you from the rest. And, dont save the thank you notes just for those you have interviewed with, write them to people who have helped you in the process. Hiring managers and potential colleagues will appreciate that you to ok the time to think about your interaction with them. They will always remember you as the person that went the extra mile.Clean up social mediaPotential employers will look you up on facebook inc and Instagram just to see what you are portraying to the rest universe. Previous to graduation, look at all of your social media outlets and clean it up before you begin to interview. Cleaning up means removing any risqu photos, foul language, or anything else that would make a potential employer pause.Even if you have your social media on a private setting, all it takes is someone who is connected with you and a quick screenshot to transmit what you really dont want others to see.Holly Caplan is a workplace issues expert, award-winning manager and author of Surviving the D-ck Clique A Girls Guide to Surviving the Male Dominated Corporate World. When to Take a Break at Work - The Muse

When to Take a Break at Work - The MuseWhen to Take a Break at Work When Im running, I hate stopping before reaching my mileage goal. Because if I pause, it feels like I cut myself short. Even if my GPS reads five miles at the end, I didnt run those miles successfully, so it doesnt count. But this way of thinking is silly. A quick rest doesnt discredit my efforts. In fact, its better to do so in the long run. If a muscle is cramping, I should stretch it. If I need a few sips of water, I should take them. Or, if I just need a minute to catch my darn breath, its OK. If I neglect listening to my body, I may not be able to finish the run at all and could even end up injured. Despite knowing all of this, my mindset about taking breaks is quite similar at the workplace- Id be better to just keep going until its done. But the thing is, breaks are so, so, important. And, just like a quick breather during a hard run, there are even certain instances at work when making time for a break can act ually set you up for more success long-term success. 1. When Youve Been Working Non-Stop for HoursWhen you have a monster of a project to finish up or a huge list of to-dos to tackle, your instinct may be to power through. After all, if you stop, even for a moment, youll be even more behind, and the stress of it all will just pile up. But, when we focus on something for too long, our brains become tired. And when our brain faces fatigue, we have difficulty focusing, making decisions, thinking clearly, and avoiding distractions. Im fairly certain thats not conducive to getting things done well, or at all. While your brain isnt technically a muscle, it needs rest like a muscle does. Think about how we do sets of exercises 15 biceps curls, then rest, then repeat two more times. Why dont we give our brains the same luxury? And heres some good nachrichtensendung Even small (really small) breaks can help. A University of Illinois study found that even a 40-second break to look away from yo ur computer screen can result in a 13% increase in productivity, says Katie Smith, a health promotion specialist. And short breaks every 10 minutes can result in a 50% decrease in fatigue. Moreover, mid-morning breaks can boost concentration, motivation, and energy. That time off, no matter what the duration, helps you press the reset button and be better prepared to move forward.HomeAdvisors offices have plenty of ways to take a break when you need it. Learn more about what its like to work thereOur OfficeSee Their Open Jobs At HomeAdvisor2. When You and Your Colleague Arent Seeing Eye-to-EyeIf you told me you never disagreed with a co-worker, I wouldnt believe you (sorry). All relationships encounter disagreements, even those at work. Rather than allowing the conversation to twist and turn until youve reached a deadlock or exploded with grasplatz, though, its better to take a breather. This time-out, explains Kim Pratt, a clinical social worker, basically involves removing yourself from a triggering situation so you have time to cool off and gain clearer perspective. Its a healthy way to manage anger (or another strong emotion) before it gets out of control. So, when you realize you and your teammate are butting heads and getting nowhere, press pause on the debate and revisit it later. My go-to line for this type of situation is, Well, I dont think were going to come to a resolution right this very moment, and Id like to think about this more. How about we reconvene at insert time? (If youre discussing via email, which can make things seem much more contentious, dont just stop responding. Send a quick note that youd like to mull it over more, and then, suggest getting on the phone or meeting in person.) The point is, you need a clear head to decide the next step and to continue the discussion in a beneficial way. The only way to do that is to extract yourself, even briefly, rather than letting things escalate.3. When Youre Having Trouble Solving a ProblemIt ne ver fails. When theres an issue I need to resolve at the office, I always come up with the answer when Im not actually doing work. Puzzle pieces that didnt fit together before are all of a sudden the perfect match. Perhaps its because Im in a different environment. Or because Im not forcing myself to think about it- my mind just wanders there. Either way, Ive come to rely on these miraculous breakthroughs, trusting that, if I cease staring helplessly at my computer, the answer will magically appear. When you walk away from a problem and think about something else, your memory resets. explains Art Markman, co-author of Brain Briefs Answers to the Most (and Least) Pressing Questions About Your Mind, The ideas that dominated your thinking recede from your thoughts. And those that were inhibited before gradually become more accessible. If your thoughts return to the problem after a pause, those other memories now have a chance to influence your thinking. In other words, even a short inter ruption from what youre doing helps wake up your creativity and generate new ideas. It allows you to replace the stale thoughts youve been trying to escape with fresh (and better) ones. Bottom line Taking breaks is not a sign of weakness or a waste of time. Sure, if youre running to the vending machine every 10 minutes to grab a new snack, you may have trouble getting anything done. But when youre stumped, or frustrated, or hitting a wall, they can be extremely helpful. So, go on quick walk around the block, chat with a co-worker about her weekend plans, or actually take your lunch away from your desk today. Youll be surprised how much better you feel when you return.

Do These 30 Things If You Want to Be Unstoppable

Do behauptung 30 Things If You Want to Be Unstoppable Do These 30 Things If You Want to Be Unstoppable Article by Benjamin P. HardyA lot of people are good at what they do. Some are even elite. A select few are completely unstoppable. Those who are unstoppable are in their own world. They dont compete with anyone but themselves. You never know what they will do only that you will be forced to respond. Even though they dont compete with you, they make you compete with them. Are you unstoppable? By the end of this blog, you will be.1. Dont Think Know and ActDont think. You already know what you have to do, and you know how to do it. Whats stopping you? ?Tim Grover, author of Relentless From Good to Great to UnstoppableRather than analyzing and thinking, you should act. Attuned to your senses, and with complete trust in yourself, do what you instinctively feel you should. As Oprah has said, Every right decision I have ever made has come from my gut. Every wrong decision Ive made was the result of me notlage listening to the greater voice of myself. The moment you start thinking, youve already lost. Thinking swiftly pulls you out of the zone.2. Always Be Prepared So You Have the Freedom to Act on InstinctJust as the yin-yang symbol possesses a kernel of light in the dark and of dark in the light, creative leaps are grounded in a technical foundation.? ?Josh Waitzkin, author of The Art of Learning An Inner Journey to Optimal PerformanceBecome a master of your craft. While everyone else is relaxing, youre practicing and perfecting. Learn the left-brained rules in and out so your right brain can have limitless freedom to break the rules and create. With enhanced consciousness, time will slow down for you. Youll see things in several mora frames than others. While theyre trying to react to the situation, youll be able to manipulate and tweak the situation to your liking.3. Dont Be Motivated by Money (or Anything External)Having nice things is, well, nice. But for you , its never been about the money, prestige, or anything else outside of you. Take these things away and nothing changes for you. Youre still going to be pushing your personal limits and giving it your all. Give these things to you, and they wont destroy you like they do fruchtwein people.4. Never Be SatisfiedThe drive to close the gap between near-perfect and perfect is the difference between great and unstoppable. ?Tim GroverEven after you achieve a goal, youre not content. For you, its not even about the goal. Its about the climb to see how far you can push yourself.Does this make you ungrateful? Absolutely not. Youre entirely humbled and grateful for everything in your life. Which is why you will never get complacent or lazy.5. Always Be in ControlUnlike most people, who are dependent on substances or other external factors, you are in control of what you put in your body, how you spend your time, and how long you stay in the zone.Act based on instinct, not impulse. Just because you could doesnt mean you do. And when you do, its because you want to, not because you have to.6. Be True to YourselfAlthough 70 percent of U.S. employees hate their jobs and only one in three Americans report being happy, relentless and unstoppable people purge everything they hate from their lives.Have the self-respect and confidence to live life on your terms. When something isnt right in your life, change it. Immediately.7. Never Let Off the PresayaPressure can bust pipes, but it also can make diamonds. ? ?Tim GroverMost people can handle pressure in small doses. But when left to their own devices, they let off the pressure and relax. Not you. You never take the pressure off yourself. Instead, you continuously turn-up the pressure. Its what keeps you alert and active.8. Dont be afraid of FailureMost people stay close to the ground, where its safe. If they fall, it wont hurt that badly. But when you choose to fly high, the fall may kill you. And youre okaywith that. To you, ther e is no ceiling and there is no floor. Its all in your head. If something goes wrong if you fail you adjust and keep going. 9. Dont Compete With Others. Make Them Compete With YouMost people are competing with other people. They continuously check in to see what others in their space (their competition) are doing. As a result, they mimic whats working for others.Conversely, youve left all competition behind. Competing with others makes absolutely zero sense to you. It pulls you from your authentic zone. So you zone out all the external noise and zone in to your internal pressure to produce.10. Never Stop LearningOrdinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education. When you want to become the best at what you do, you never stop learning. You never stop improving and honing your skills and knowledge.Your unparalleled preparation is what gives you power. No one else is willing to pay the price youve paid.11. Success Isnt Enough It Only Increases the PressureFor mo st people, becoming successful is enough. However, when youre relentless, success only increases the pressure to do more. Immediately following the achievement of a goal, youre focused on your next challenge.12. Dont Get Crushed by SuccessSuccess can become a catalyst for failure. ?Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism The Disciplined Pursuit of LessMost people cant handle success, authority, or privilege. These thingsdestroys them. These thingsmake them lazy. When most peopleget what they want, they stop doing the very things that got them there. The external noise becomes too intense. But for you, no external noise can push harder than your own internal pressure. Its not about this achievement, but the one after, and the one after that. There is no destination. Only when youre finished.13. Completely Own It When You Screw UpImplementing extreme ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership and developing a pl an to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team. Jocko Willink, author of Extreme Ownership How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and WinNo blame. No deception or illusion. Just the cold, hard truth. When you mess up, you own it. And as the leader, you own it when your team fails. Only with extreme ownership can you have complete freedom and control.14. Let Your Work Speak for ItselfWell done, is well said.? Anthony Liccione, poet and authorCal Newports recent book, Deep Work, distinguishes deep work from shallow work. Heres the differenceDeep work is- Rare- High value- Non-replicable (i.e., not easy to copy/outsource)Shallow work is-Common- Low value- Replicable (i.e., anyone can do it)Talking is shallow. Anyone can do it. Its easily replicated. Its low value. Conversely, deep work is rare. Its done by people who are focused and working while everyone else is talking. Deep work is so good it cant be ignored. It doesnt need words. It speaks for itself.15. Always Work on Your Menta l StrengthMental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously. Left to my own devices, I am always looking for ways to become more and more psychologically impregnable. When uncomfortable, my instinct is not to avoid the discomfort but to become at peace with it. My instinct is always to seek out challenges as opposed to avoiding them. ?Josh WaitzkinThe better you can be under pressure, the further youll go than anyone else because theyll crumble under pressure. The best training you will ever do is mental training. Wherever your mind goes, your body follows. Wherever your thoughts go, your life follows.16. Confidence Is Your Greatest AsplatzsetYouve heard it before Running a marathon is far more mental than physical. A persons ability to zulauf a marathon or do anything hard is more a reflection of their level of confidence than their actual ability.Your confidence determines- The size of the challenges/goals y ou undertake- How likely you are toachieve those goals- How well you bounce back from failuresIf youre not confident, you will never put yourself out there in the first place. When youre confident, you dont care how many times you fail Youre going to succeed. And it doesnt matter how stacked the odds seem against you.17. Surround Yourself With People Who Make You Think ofthe Future, Not the PastWhen you surround yourself with people who remind you of your past, youll have a hard time progressing. This is why we get stuck in certain rolesthatwe cant seem to break free from.Surrounding yourself with people whom you want to be like givesyou a clean slate. Youre no longer defined by your past only by the future you are creating.18. Let Things Go, But Never ForgetBeing unstoppable requires carrying no unnecessary mental or emotional baggage. Consequently, youll need to immediately and completely forgive anyone who has wronged you. However, forgiveness doesnt mean you forget. And it does nt mean you have to do further business with those who have wronged you.19. Have Clear GoalsWhile a fixation on results is certainly unhealthy, short-term goals can be useful developmental tools if they are balanced within a nurturing long-term philosophy.? ?Josh WaitzkinAccording to loads of psychological research, the most motivating goals are clearly defined and time-bound.Your goals can either be focused on your behaviors (e.g., Im going to write 500 words per day) or on the outcomes youre seeking (e.g., Im going to get published in The New York Times by June 1, 2016).For most people, behaviorally focused goals are the better and more motivating option. But when you crave the results so much that the work is irrelevant, your aim should be directed straight at the outcomes you want. However, results-focused goals are better when short-term and grounded in your long-term vision and philosophy. When your why is strong enough, the how will take care of itself.20. Respond Immediately , Rather Than Analyzing or StallingAnticipation of an event is always more extreme than the event itself both for positive and negative events.Just do it. Train yourself to respond immediately when you feel you should do something. Stop questioning yourself. Dont analyze it. Dont question if it came from God or from yourself. Just act.Youll figure out what to do after youve taken action. Until you take action, it will all be hypothetical. But once you act, it becomes practical.21. Choose Simplicity Over ComplicationIts easy to be complicated. Most of the research and jargon in academia and business ismore complicated than it needs to be.Cutting to the core and hitting the truth is hard, because its simple. Very few people will give you the truth. When you ask them a question, it gets mighty complicated. There are so many variables, or It depends, they say.T. S. Eliot said it best, Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?Wisd om is timeless and simple. Learn wisdom and choose it.22. Never Be Jealous or Envious of Someone Elses AccomplishmentsBeing unstoppable means you genuinely want whats best for everyone even those you would consider your competitors. Jealousy and envy are the ego, which operates out of fear. The reason you are happy for other peoples success is because their success has nothing to do with you. You are in control of you. And you are different from every other person. There is no one who can do exactly what you can do. You have your own superpower with your own unique ability to contribute.23. Take the Shot Every TimeIf I fail more than you, I win. Seth Godin, author and marketerYou miss every shot you dont take. And most people dont want to take the shot. Fear of failure paralyzes them. The only way you can become unstoppable is if you stop thinking about it. Just take the shot. Dont do it only when its convenient or when you feel ready. Just go and make whatever adjustments you need after the fact.24. Dont Get Caught Up in the Results of Your SuccessAlways remain focused on what got you those results the work. When you start doing noteworthy stuff, there are benefits that can become distractions. It can get easy to ride the wave of your previous work. Keep practicing. Perfect your craft. Never forget what got you here.25. Think and Act 10XWhen 10X is your measuring stick, you immediately see how you can bypass what everyone else is doing. Dan Sullivan, founder of Strategic CoachMost people even those you deem to be world class are not operating at 10X. In truth, you could surpass anyone if you radically stretched your thinking and belief system.Going 10X changes everything. As Dan Sullivan has said, 10X thinking automatically takes you outside the box of your present obstacles and limitations. It pulls you out of the problems most people are dealing with and opens you to an entirely new field of possibilities. When you take your goal of earning $100,000 this y ear and change it to $1,000,000, youre forced to operate at a different level. The logical and traditional approach doesnt work with 10X. As Shane Snow, author of Smartcuts How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, has said, 10X progress is built on bravery and creativity instead. Working smarter. The question is Are you willing to go there? Not just entertain the thought for a second or two and then revert back to common thinking. No. Are you willing to sit with 10X thinking? Are you willing to question your own thought processes and open yourself to believing an entirely different set of possibilities?Could you convince yourself to believe in your 10X potential? Are you willing to undertake goals that seems lunacy, to you and everyone else? Are you willing to take the mental leap, trusting the universe will conspire to make it happen?26. Set Goals That Far Exceed Your Current CapabilitiesYou need to aim beyond what you are capable of. You need to develop a complete dis regard for where your abilities end. If you think youre unable to work for the best company in its sphere, make that your aim. If you think youre unable to be on the cover of Timemagazine, make it your business to be there. Make your vision of where you want to be a reality. Nothing is impossible.? ?Paul Arden, author of Its Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to BeIf your goals are logical, they wont force you to create luck. Being unstoppable means your goals challenge you to be someone more than you currently are. As Jim Rohn has said, Dont wish it wereeasier, wish you were better.27. Make Time for Recovery and RejuvenationWherever you are, make sure youre there. ?Dan SullivanWhen you focus on results rather than on being busy, youre 100 percent on when youre working and 100 percent off when youre not. This not only allows you to be present in the moment, but it also allows you to take the time you need to rest and recover.Your ability to work at a high level is like fit ness. If you never take a break between sets, you wont be able to build strength, stamina, and endurance. However, not all rest produces recovery. Certain things are more soothing than others.Recovering from my work generally consists of writing in my journal, listening to music, spending time with my wife and kids, preparing and eating delicious food, or serving other people. These things rejuvenate me. They make my work both possible and meaningful.28. Start Before Youre ReadyThe best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.? ?Chinese ProverbMost people wait. They believe they can start after they have enough time, money, connections, and credentials. They wait until they feel secure. Not people who are unstoppable.Unstoppable people started last year. They started five years ago before they even knew what they were doing. They started before they had any money. They started before they had all the answers. They started when no one else believed in them . The only permission they needed was the voice inside them prompting them to move forward. And they moved.29. If You Need Permission, You Probably Shouldnt Do ItA mentor of mine is a highly successful real estate investor. Throughout his career, hes had hundreds of people ask him if they should go into real estate. He tells every one of them the same thing that they shouldnt do it. In fact, he actually tries talking most of them out of it. And in most cases, he succeeds. Why would he do that? Those who are going to succeed will do so regardless of what I say, he told me.I know so many people who chase whatever worked for other people. They never truly decide what they want to do and end up jumping from one thing to the next trying to strike quick gold. Almost always, it turns out thatthey stop digging when theyre just a few feet from the gold and they dont even realize it.No one will ever give you permission to live your dreams.30. Dont Make ExceptionsZig Ziglar used to tell a stor y of traveling one day and not getting in bed until 4 A.M. An hour and a half later (530), his alarm went off. He said, Every fiber of my being was telling me to stay in bed. But he had made a commitment, so he got up anyway. Admittedly, he had a horrible day and wasnt productive at all.Yet, he says that decision changed his life. As he explainsHad I bowed to my human, physical, emotional, and mental desire to sleep in, I would have made that exception. A week later, I might have made an exception if I only got four hours of sleep. A week later, maybe I only got seven hours of sleep. The exception so many times becomes the rule. Had I slept in, I wouldve faced that danger. Watch those exceptionsHence, Zig was unstoppable. From this point, your strategy is to make everyone else get on your level. Youre not going down to theirs. Youre not competing with anyone else ever again. Theyre going to have to compete with you. From now on, the end result is all that matters. ?Tim GroverWhen yo ure unstoppable, you will make sure to get what you want. Everything you need to know is already within you. All you need to do is trust yourself and act.Are you unstoppable?A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Benjamin P.
